Event Details

Muscular bodies are often associated with health, strength and success, but for some people, pursuing muscularity can become a source of distress. In this talk, drawing on research and lived experience, we will explore the factors that may lead men to strive for a more muscular body. We will consider when common fitness practices, including training, modifying diet, and supplement use, may become harmful. We will also discuss muscle dysmorphia and related eating concerns.

Rather than presenting muscle building itself as problematic, we will consider the ways behaviours can become excessive and why men’s body image-related concerns may go unnoticed.

Finally, we will discuss barriers that may prevent men from seeking support and consider practical ways that individuals, healthcare professionals, and organisations can respond, promoting greater awareness, empathy, and inclusion.

Sensitive Content Caution

This presentation will cover the potentially challenging topic of body image in men and boys. Discussions will also include personal reflections on experiences with body image concerns and disordered eating. Within this talk, there will be content related to eating disorders/disordered eating, mental disorders, and suicidality.

This talk is for anyone interested in men’s health, body image and wellbeing. It will be especially valuable for healthcare professionals, educators, coaches, fitness professionals, support organisations, men with lived experience, and those wishing to support a friend or family member.
